Inauguration of National Law University, Cuttack

The state government has earmarked another 20 acres for the National Law University of Odisha in Cuttack. Naveen had laid its foundation stone on January 5, 2008. Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan inaugurated it today.

The government, Naveen reminded, had earlier allotted 30 acres for the campus and renewed its commitment to provide support and infrastructure for the university on the lines of a National Law School.

The state government had provided Rs 5-crore corpus fund for the University for a Self-financing Scheme for its operation addition to the land. Naveen said: “Additional funds will be allocated after the necessary legislation.”

The university was set up under the National Law University Act, 2008 (Act 4 of 2008), to design and run regular and periodical course of learning for dissemination of knowledge of advanced learning in legal subjects and various issues of law.

NLUC was inaugurated by the Chief Justice of India and Visitor, NLUO Justice K. G. Balakrishnan, in the presence of the Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik and Other dignitaries including Justice. I. M. Quddusi, Chancellor, NLUO and Acting Chief Justice, Odisha High Court; Sh. Devi Prasad Mishra, Minister of Higher Education, Government of Odisha; Sh. Bikram Keshari Arukha, Minister of Law, Government of Odisha; and Prof. N. L. Mitra, former Vice-Chancellor, NLSIU Bangalore and Founder Vice-Chancellor, NLU Jodhpur.

Naveen hoped that the university would develop into an institution of excellence devoted to multidisciplinary studies.

Stating that his government has adopted a strategy to turn Odisha as a favoured destination for higher education in the country, Naveen said: “We are requesting the Centre to give a fair share of centrally-funded institutes. My government is also investing its resources to create other institutes of excellence such as IIT, Indian Institute of Information Technology and National Institute of Science and Education Research (NISER).”
