JSL signs MoU to set up 1320 power plant at Luni in Dhenkanal
Ratan Jindal led JSL Limited and the Odisha government on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding for establishment of 1320 MW Super Critical Thermal Power Plant (SCTPP) with an investment of Rs 7375 crore. The project would come up at Luni in Dhenkanal district.
The MoU was signed by state energy secretary Pradip Kumar Jena and JSL resident director Rajdeep Mohanty in the presence of chief minister Naveen Patnaik.
As per the MoU, the company would draw water from the Mahanadi river system.
Speaking on the occasion, chief minister Mr Patnaik said the proposed project would create direct and indirect employment opportunities for 2600 people.
Minister of state for energy Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak said the state would avail around 158 to 185 MW from this project at variable cost. “Successful implementation of this project would immensely help the state in meeting is increasing power demand. The benefits of the project would be extended to the consumers so that they will get power cheaper rate,” the minister said.
During the last few years, the power demand of the state has registered an upward trend due to rapid industrialistion, massive rural electrification and increase in consumer profile.
So far, 26 MoUs have been signed by the state government with independent power producers (IPPS) for setting up 31100 MW thermal power projects in the state. The share of the state out of these power plants will be around 5480 megawatts.
